Prostitute Decoy Wig, St. Paul, MN, 1974
Another great item from the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. Carolen Bailey, one of St. Paul’s first female police officers, wore this wig while working undercover with the city’s vice squad. She apparently made quite a convincing prostitute. During her first day working the corner of Selby and Western, she arrested 60 would-be johns. Or so the story goes…

Police Bra, 1971
Why, you might ask, does the Minnesota Historical Society hold in its vast collections a pink, size 36DD Maidenform brassiere? I’m still trying to piece together the whole story, but it appears this undergarment was probably presented to a St. Paul police officer named Carolen F. Bailey upon her promotion to the rank of sergeant in 1971. Bailey broke down a series of gender barriers during her long career with the St. Paul Police Department. Was she amused or repelled by this token of achievement? If I find out, I’ll let you know.
