First Day of Busing, Minneapolis, 1971
Monica Lash (left) and Molly Johnson (right) were among the hundreds of students who attended new schools under Minneapolis’s controversial Hale-Field desegregation plan during the early 1970s. The plan sent many students from Hale Elementary School (most of them white) to nearby Field Elementary and many Field students (most of them black) to Hale. A few years later Minneapolis adopted a city-wide desegregation plan under federal court supervision.
