One of the Twin Cities area’s most popular summertime hangouts—Excelsior Amusement Park in Excelsior, Minnesota—shut down for good on September 3, 1973, after nearly a half century in business. Its owners started a new amusement park—Valleyfair in Shakopee—two and a half years later. Excelsior’s 48-horse carousel is still operating at Valleyfair.
