1979 Minnesota Twins Commercial (Post-Carew)
On February 3, 1979, the Minnesota Twins traded future hall-of-famer Rod Carew to the California Angels for Ken Landreaux, Paul Hartzell, Brad Havens, Dave Engle, and a pot of cash estimated to be worth $200,000. Fans denounced the trade as evidence that Twins owner Calvin Griffith was too cheap to field a decent team, and in fact, the move accelerated the arrival of what turned out to be a prolonged and embarrassing era of baseball ineptitude in Minnesota. This ad, with its tagline, “We’ve got something to prove,” was part of an unsuccessful campaign to regain the affection of the disenchanted Twins faithful.
