Paleo-Snowboarding, Wirth Park, Minneapolis, 1978
I can’t pretend to be an expert on such things, but this video appears to constitute some of the earliest evidence of snowboarding in the United States. The guy who posted it, Mark Halseth, claims that in 1978, he found “a yellow thing that looked like a water ski” frozen in a lake. He chipped it out and discovered that it was something called a “Snurfer.” (The original Snurfer dates back to the late 1960s.) Dude took the thing to Wirth Park, hopped on board, and gave it a go. One thing led to another and before you know it, he’s Snurfing in a Labatt’s beer commercial. Is it legit? You make the call.
