Minnesotans Gather at the State Capitol to Pay Their Respects to the Late Hubert H. Humphrey, 1978
U.S. Senator and former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey died of bladder cancer on January 13, 1978. Two days later his body was brought to St. Paul to lie in state in the Capitol rotunda. By the time the doors to the Capitol were opened for the public viewing, more than 1,000 people had gathered outside, bundled up in requisite Minnesota mid-winter garb. Over the next 17 hours, hundreds of mourners filed silently past the coffin. It’s hard to imagine that any Minnesota politician will ever again inspire the level of public respect and affection that was on display that day.
